About Jacques Fabian

Introducing Jacques

Jacques Fabian began his apprenticeship as a Silver and Goldsmith under John Hale of Adelaide, South Australia.

As an apprentice, Jacques worked on a number of commissions from 144 piece cutlery set for a prominent Adelaide family through to Cathedral works for the many churches in the city of Adelaide.

On completion of his apprenticeship Jacques went off the Sir John Cass School of Arts to refine his Diamond setting skills. From there he travelled Europe working in various places refining and developing his own style.

On his return to Australia, Jacques set up the first Trade based education facility of its kind in Cremorne, Sydney, Australia.

 

In 2007 Jacques launched his Traditional Hand Skills education program on DVD through Austrade called Silvercraft. The DVD series of 12 project came with the silver, gemstones and all the tools required to complete the projects. Sadly, they are all sold out. On the upside- Weekend workshops from STUDIO41 are proving to be extremely popular and positions fill quickly.

Jumping forward to 2017 and Jacques continues to provide mentor-ships and guidance to the industry utilising various forms of communication from skyping to webinars (to come later in 2017)

Certificate III Jewellery Manufacture Full Time

MEM30605 Jewellery Manufacture Full Time – On Campus

The Certificate III Jewellery Manufacture Full time course is delivered on a commercial basis so that the student will gain all the practical skills to either run their own business or be the best applicant for any employment opportunities.

Full-time course are delivered over 12 months and attendance is required 4 days per week from 8.30am – 4.30pm.

You will have two days with your lecture which is followed by two days in the studio for production.

The course fees include notes, tool levy, studio hire, web page, gallery exhibitions and the best Trade Certified education in the industry.

The minimum requirements for achievement of the Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture (MEM30605) are:

  • completion of all core units of competency listed below, and
  • completion of Group A Jewellery Manufacture stream units from the list below to the value of at least 40 points, and
  • completion of units from Group B Certificate III Trade specialisation units listed in Appendix I, Volume 1 of the Training Package, to bring the total value to at least 73 points

However, please do not be daunted by the amount of points, we tailor all training to your learning style.

Points associated with prerequisites count towards the total (refer to units and prerequisites listing in Appendix 2, Volume 1).

Appropriate Group B elective units to the value of 16 points may be chosen from other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses where those units are available for inclusion at Certificate III. Note that the elective units listed below include all of the units that are approved for selection from the MEM Training Package for use in this qualification. This meets the NQC requirement that one sixth of the total units must be able to be selected from other qualifications in the same Training Package.

Registered Training Organisations must seek a determination from Manufacturing Skills Australia in respect of the allocation of points values for units of competency drawn from other Training Packages or accredited courses.

Apprenticeship and On The Job Training

MEM30605 Jewellery Manufacture  – On The Job

This program is generally for those who have apprentices. You have two options:

  • One day per week – the Classic Trade School system
  • On The Job – We come to you

What will On The Job Training Require:

  • First Initial workshop visit to ensure you have all the facilities required to deliver on the job training. If you don’t, well we are happy to see what we can do to facilitate this on your behalf.
  • Up to Four workshop visits per year for some on the job review
    • How is every one is settling in
    • As well as what the work requirements are for your workshop
    • Is there something specific you would like to see your apprentice learn.

 

We’re here to help!. These visits will involve some time with the employer, the supervisor if that person is different fro the employer and time with the apprentice.

  • Monthly Skype sessions with the apprentice to see how they are progressing. They can show and articulate what work they have been undertaking and ask questions on alternative manufacturing process if they want.
  • Log Book recording – primarily the responsibility of both the apprentice and the employer. This evidence is critical to your training certification as it is indisputable proof that the apprentice holds the skills that he, and therein, the employer is confident that they have.

If there are skills or trade training requirements that the workshop can not cover then training can be arranged at the Academy of Jewellery manufacture and Design Studio in Strathalbyn. The delivery of these courses cover units such as Making Mounts and Settings, Shank Making and Setting.

The on the Job training costs are subject to the cost of travel and accommodation cost of the assessor.

The One day per week option allows your apprentice to be trained in our facility. This will be delivered over 36 months (three year period) and be up to 40 weeks per year.

RPL – Recognition to Prior Learning

RPL – Recognition to Prior Learning

This process is for all those Crafts-peeps out there who have the skill, however, have not had the opportunity to have it recognised by their peers.

Recognition to Prior Learning takes and active look and review of your Manufacturing workmanship and applies the units within the Training Package to your work. Together we collate a Portfolio of your work.

If however there are any required units  or core units that may have been missed you will be directed to undertake specific course units to fill those gaps that may be there.

On completion of the requirements you will receive your trade papers. After receiving your trade papers you will be able to take on new adventures like… your very own apprentice!

The RPL process fee is $3,500.00 and includes your 8 hour timed exercise.

MEM40311 – Certificate IV in Advanced Jewellery Manufacture

The Certificate IV Advanced Jewellery Making is different from the Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture as the core units involve increased focus on Small Business studies.

To be able to undertake this course you must have completed your Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture or have the required skills as a pre-requisite to enter the course.

The minimum requirements for achievement of the MEM40311 Certificate IV in Advanced Jewellery Manufacture are:

  • completion of all twelve (12) core units of competency listed below, and
  • completion of elective units as described below from Groups A and B, to bring the total value to at least 109 points.

Elective units are to be chosen as follows:

  • completion of Group A electives to the value of at least 12 points
  • completion of Group B electives to bring the total value of elective units to 109 points.

Appropriate elective units to the value of 22 points may be chosen from other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses where those units are available for inclusion at Certificate IV. Note that the elective units listed below include all of the units that are approved for selection from the MEM05 Training Package for use in this qualification. This meets the NQC requirement that one sixth of the total units must be able to be selected from other qualifications in the same Training Package.
